Some months ago I took this photo of my favourite fruit, the pomegranate, and though the myth that follows, is not related to the title of this challenge, I would like to share it with you.
In the Greek myth of Persephone’s abduction by Hades, lord of the underworld, the pomegranate represents life, regeneration, and marriage. One day while out gathering flowers, Persephone noticed a narcissus of exquisite beauty. As she bent down to pick it, the earth opened and Hades seized her and dragged her down to his kingdom. By eating a few pomegranate seeds, Persephone tied herself to Hadesβthe pomegranate being a symbol of the indissolubility of marriage. Inconsolable at the loss of her daughter, the corn goddess Demeter prevented the earth from bearing fruit unless she saw her daughter again. Zeus intervened and worked out a compromise: Persephone should live with Hades for one third of the year and the other two thirds with Demeter. Persephone’s return from the underworld each year is marked by the arrival of Spring.
Some people say the apple is the forbidden fruit, others say it is the tomato, and yet others claim the real pomme dβamour is the pomegranate.

That’s a fabulous shot of a pommegranate, Paula. Those Gods were so mischievous, weren’t they? I’m just happy that Spring is in the air. (well, almost!)
Great photo and a great subject! I used to live in Greece, and one of my favourite customs is when pomegranates are thrown on the floor outside a wedding as a sign of fertility. It does get a little messy though!
The good friends Israel & Iran both use pomegranate when they celebrate new year π
It’s a tasty fruit that I like a lot, but mangostan and punjabi mango is my favorites.

The thing that really gets me about this is how well lit it is. The detail is great, but the lighting is perfect.
