Negative Space – a space that is not there or the space that you don’t like?
It can be either, but speaking in terms of photography it is a space that isolates the subject of a photo, or complements it, or draws attention to it. To see more examples of negative space in photography please see my guest’s post.
This is my interpretation of negative space.
This is Black & White Sunday photo challenge with the theme “negative space”. If you decide to join in, make sure to leave your pingbacks and links in the comment section. Please, check out the list of forthcoming events and challenges on Scheduled challenges page.
My earlier post in colour with the same theme: Bleak Beak
Very interesting challenge, the candle light vs the black really works, great photo!
Not sure if I´m doing my ´join in´ right, but a while back I made a post about negative space that fits in, I think https://elbuenoelfeo.wordpress.com/2013/03/18/inside-snow/
They are mind-blowing, you know. All three of your examples. Yesterday I was crazy about the second and now about the third (I wonder why). The third one looks like infrared.
Yes – you’re right – the third is infrared. I really like your affirmation about the photos – it’s great to get such positive feedback. Thank you very much.
Your work deserves to be “studied”. I don’t have a chance to this often cause of my busy schedule and I am often sidetracked responding to bloggers that are really persistent in commenting. Did you capture it as infrared or you managed the look in the post processing?
Great picture, Paula. I always try to consider negative space in its own right, creating an own form or shape. And I must say I find the black (“background”) shape in your picture very pleasing. Good one!
Me too. Yes, on both posts. I’ll see yours tommorrow, I’m not near my computer now. For me it’a a lot work to compile guest posts, and I will suspend them soon.
I agree with that Paula. I did a top 5 on my bench challenge, but it does take a lot of time so I haven’t done that this time round. I always browse the comments anyway and visit blogs that way and I am sure others do the same. Hope you are keeping well 🙂
Hi P! I enjoyed this music – so relaxing and went well with the negative space. Sometimes in art class when the students learn about negative space in painting we connect it to moods and energy–and that flame photo of yours had a nice relaxing mood with the dark negative space -!☺️❤️
So simple and yet so beautiful. Love the photo Paula.

I hope you get enough sleep. It’s not nice having to step out in the freezing cold so early in the morning.

I do. I go to bed early Paula (9pm). The early morning allows me to exercise a bit and get myself ready for the day.

I sleep just an hour longer than you do, but go to bed so much later. I don’t like mornings.

Think I managed to do it, although the negative space is less dark than the original, still prett negative 😉

I processed the image in Photoshop. Unfortunately I no longer have that program – it was on my old computer that crashed last year.

Yes, thank you, Sue. The idea of negative space is not new to me. I have done it many times and even considered it like Tobias in its own right.
