BLACK & WHITE SUNDAY: AFTER AND BEFORE Y1-05

Regular visitors to my blog know that once a month on a Sunday (usually the last one in a month) I post a combined photo challenge theme for Black&White Sunday. It is called AFTER and BEFORE and it invites you to post the same  image both in black and white and in colour. The topic and subject are entirely arbitrary. The only condition is that you post an image captured in colour and that you turn it monochrome in post processing. I enjoy this little exercise which permits me to see the same scene through colour and without it, and I hope that you will enjoy doing the same. The deadline is next Saturday. Have a great week ahead!

AFTER

Sometimes I have trouble deciding which edit I prefer. Is it colour or black and white? The thing I like about black and white edit here is that there is no sight of the pink jacket in the right of the frame, and that the shapes of mountain are more discernible. Still, I like to think of nature in colour, its colours and shades are inimitable.

  1. Hard to choose, Paula. I think colour wins because it’s more cheerful and more natural. However, the b&w is dramatic and without the distraction of colour I appreciate the detail more. Great shot, whichever version.

    • Thank you very much, Debbie for this analysis. It makes me realize that it’s not an easy choice even for the people who did not capture it. I’ll see the entries in the evening when I am at my computer 🙂

  4. Interesting that I like both of them for different reasons. I’m probably inclining to color since I generally like natural stuff in color, but the black & white is wonderfully crisp too.

    • Marilyn, I was very interested in hearing what you have to say cause I love your nature photos. Thank you very much 🙂

  5. Paula as you know I love tons of colour. The black and white is dramatic and yes the pink jacketed lady isn’t so visible. Wishing you a happy day.

    • You are sweet dear Sue. Yes, I know of your love of colour, and you are right to do so. This editing is just to make us see things differently.

      • Paula well said. I’m a bit like a puppy who sees a squirrel or a Magpie bird after something shiny. It would be good for me to sit back and see it all in a more thoughtful way.

  6. For me, the black and white sucks the life out of the photo and turns it into a wonderfully dramatic artwork. The colour version is real and I want to be there (and even tolerate Miss Pink Jacket 🙂 ). Happy and peaceful Sunday, Paula!

  8. Colour version for me , too, this time!
Much nearer to the real nature of this landscape…., to say nothing of the red coat and its reflection on the water…

  25. Intriguing that I like them two for various reasons. I’m most likely slanting to shading since I by and large like regular stuff in shading, however the dark and white is superbly fresh as well…

  26. Some scenes are way too busy and detailed for any type of BW composition. You have to shoot them in colour if at all. The amount of contrast often helps to be the decider in such circumstances. Sufficient contrast usually — not always, means that it will look good in BW.
