THURSDAY’S SPECIAL: ILLUSION

This is another weekly photo challenge known as Thursday’s Special. This week Thursday’s Special is bringing you the theme “Illusion”. In my photo of island San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice I played with the gradient filter to blur some parts of the image and to create an illusion of a miniature model Venice.

This is just one of the ways to create an illusion in photography. For this theme you can use forced perspective, fake miniatures, creative bokeh, panning, long exposure, silhouette photography – to name but few of the most commonly used tools. Come to think of it, any type of pictorial photograph should fit the bill.

Today it is the 30th March, and you have a week to respond (i.e. by Wednesday 5th April). Can’t wait to see your entries. Happy Thursday!

  2. Paula! You are a genius! The lyrics and the topic with the image stitched seamlessly. The lyrics alone would keep me busy for hours. “…distorted imagination wandered from exile among nations and lands that have adopted me, in exchange for a laugh along the echoes of history…” The imagery is rich with references to clowns and magicians (or priests?) Thank you once again for the delightful post.

    1. It feels great to be appreciated :). You must have some understanding of Italian then. I am very impressed that you know music so well, and have a deep understanding of it. I discovered Talco just weeks ago. They come from Venice, so they must fit the image. “predicatori” are preachers, but in this song also imposters – prestigiatori.

  3. Love this image, Paula. It really does look like a miniature model city. The music is a lot of fun although I haven’t the slightest idea what they’re singing about. 😀 xx

    1. Thank you very much, Sylvia. This makes that I don’t have to get a tilt and shift camera. These things must cost fortune. Luckily there are now ways to create this illusion in post processing. Some years ago I did the same thing with Paris (captured from Montparnasse). The song is really terrific. Our blogger friend Postcards got the translation right. Talco is a young band from Venice singing ska punk genre.

  7. What fun music it has my toes tapping but like Sylvia I have no idea what it was about. You were certainly successful in creating an illusion. I have not delved into editing tools but have managed to find some illusions https://irenewaters19.com/2017/03/30/illusion-thursdays-special/

  8. I love your photo. I’ll see if I can come up with something. I’m guessing you don’t mean illusions created by merging several images in Photoshop or some similar program.

    1. No, of course not, but if someone wants to do it, it’s fine too. Your distorted water reflections would be great for this :).

  22. This is a great photo Paula, I have tried the tilt shift approach before now and it can work beautifully, isolating the subject and altering its appearance. I am busy decorating this week so haven’t had a lot of time to blog, but I found one image that might fit this challenge. If not I promise to do better next time! 😀
