A Walk Around a Lake for Jo

This Monday I am taking you for a walk around Lago di Piano in northern Italy, close to the border with Switzerland.

It all started the night before when I was standing high above Lugano Lake on mountain Sighignola on a spot called Balcone d’Italia. I did not conform to visiting just Lugano Lake and the town, but was determined to explore some smaller lakes near by. The view lead me to Lago di Piano, a small jewel of a lake that was proclaimed a Nature Reserve. The plan was made to visit it the following day some time before sunset. Here is what I saw:

    Paula, these are amazing photos. You’ve captured light in many different guises. Going off the beaten track always pays dividends.

    (I’m writing this comment in Zagreb, before I head off to the Botanical Gardens. This morning was two markets and a number of churches, a thunderstorm and soup. I like your city. Unhappily I leave tomorrow after only one day here.)

        I had potato soup on a hefty ham base at a restaurant just opposite the cathedral – you pass a couple of spiral trees in pots as you go into a courtyard my photo helpfully has the word restaurant! Botanical gardens didn’t happen – closed on Monday. I return to Zagreb overnight on Sunday and have a morning begging before I travel on to Budapest – Monday again! No naive art, or craft museum either. At Plitvička writing this.

    I saw the images first in the reader and thought…that looks kind of like Lake Como and then I clicked on your post and read that it’s not far away! Beautiful images!! I love it up there so much.

      Yes, it is very close. Actually I stayed just above Lake Como while I was in the region. That made it possible for me to drive the entire length of the lake and to visit most of the places 🙂 Thank you for your comment Laura

    It’s like an oasis.

    I’ve googled this place and found the the English Wikipedia has next to nothing on this place but the Italian version has plenty. Here it is translated:

    “The Lake Plan ( the Plan or lake or lake Romazza ) is a small lake located in the Val Menaggio. It has an area of 0.72 km2 and a maximum depth of 13 meters and occupies the valley behind the town of Porlezza (CO). During the winter it is covered with ice.

    View of Menaggio , Val Menaggio and the lake floor (bottom) . ‘s An ideal extension of Lake Lugano and Lake Lugano as a separate appendix of the same but , over the millennia , the river flooded Cuccio who have created a wide coverage area , now the only major tributary is the river that comes from mountain Civagno Tremezzo .

    The lake floor is a typical lake of glacial valley floor , currently being used in a large nature reserve called Wilderness Lake Piano and recognized as a site of Community importance by the European Union .

    On the small promontory that plugs into the mirror of the lake is to report the medieval village of Castel San Pietro , an example of village surrounded by walls and built , like many other towns in the area , on the remains of an ancient site of observation and reporting period Roman . In fact, there stood a tower of light signals was probably exposed to the homologous tower of Carlisle which was in turn connected visually with the tower of the town towers , upstream in the direction of San Bartolomeo Val Cavargna.

    Among the species , peculiar is the presence of the crayfish Austropotamobius italicus .

    On the shores of the lake there are numerous campsites that , in summer, are frequented by tourists mainly Dutch and German .

    During the winter, the lake of the Plan has the feature to freeze for a period between December and early February due to the shadow cast by Mount Galbiga or Calbiga : the frozen surface of the lake makes it therefore possible that the activity of skating is commonly practiced by the inhabitants of the area.”
