BLACK & WHITE SUNDAY: AFTER AND BEFORE Y1-04

On Sundays I normally publish a photo challenge in black and white that I call Black & White Sunday. I usually come up with a fresh theme for it, but once a month I publish a recurrent (monthly) theme: after and before where you are supposed to show the same photo, regardless of the subject, in both monochrome and colour.

This is a way of encouraging you not only to set your camera to black and white setting, but to shoot in colour and to convert it into black and white in post processing. Hopefully you will enjoy this exercise in seeing and editing. After all it is all about fun. Have a  beautiful day!

  2. This is one where I can easily say — definitely color. The yellow green of the leaves frames the water perfectly.

    1. Thank you, Marilyn. As a child from the coast I tend to like colour on the sea better, except in this composition 😀

  3. I would never have thought the b&w of this one could be so wonderful. You lose he colour of the bushes, but you gain wonderful definition of the track; the layering of the sky; and the glisten and gleam of the sea.

  18. Hello, Paula. Have been studying your versions, and it’s interesting how the monochrome track somehow draws you in more than the colour version does. Perhaps it is all a matter of contrast. All very fascinating stuff this perception lark. Here’s my offering: http://wp.me/pKVAM-2jw

  23. The mood of the black and white one is noticeably chillier – I think this is more than just the loss of colour warmth and perhaps to do with the subliminal connection to early films.

    1. 🙂 You are right, Hillary. That’s a beautiful, perceptive comment. I was nostalgic about old family photos from the seaside. In this case I am in favour of monochrome cause of the compelling composition in the frame.

    1. In your colour version my eye is drawn to the colour of red leaves, and in your monochrome I can appreciate how well they frame the little boy’s face. 🙂 This is a lovely example what an edit can do, how much difference it can produce. Thanks so much, Lisa.
