THURSDAY’S SPECIAL: TRACES OF THE PAST Y4-07

After a month’s break I decided to challenge you again with things from the past.

What Traces of the Past have you found near you or on some of your travels? Are they remains of the things once built and now in despair, the remains of natural occurrences or from your personal past? Whether they provoke admiration or make you nostalgic or even horrified, here’s an opportunity to showcase them for this photo challenge.

In the valley of the river Mincio in Lombardy there is a scenic little village by the name of Borghetto sul Mincio. If it weren’t for flocks of tourists coming to the place, I would call it one of the most idyllic and authentic villages in Northern Italy.

BLACK & WHITE SUNDAY: TRACES OF THE PAST Y4-06

I usually post castles, churches and ruins for this challenge, but this time I thought it would be cool to see Traces of the Past in nature. After all traces of the past are all around us.

Here is an example of a remnant of one of many volcanic eruptions on Tenerife Island.

THURSDAY’S SPECIAL: TRACES OF THE PAST Y4-05

You are wrong if you think that I forgot about the Traces of the Past photo challenge. I am a day late, but here it is – Traces of the Past in colour this time.

With the largest square in Italy and one of the largest in Europe, and its many narrow alleys and canals Padua revealed its hidden beauty to me on a beautiful night walk.

Take your time deciding what you are going to post for this photo challenge. As always you are completely free in your choice. I will be back next week to look at your entries.

BLACK & WHITE SUNDAY: TRACES OF THE PAST Y4-04

This is the only Black & White Sunday this month, and I decided that it should be Traces of the Past (the recurrent photo challenge on this blog). Here is one of the most beautiful landmarks of Northumberland – the famous Bamburgh Castle. The day I took this photo it glistened nicely in late, golden sunlight, but for this opportunity I decided to show it in silvery tones i.e. in black and white.

Don’t feel bad if there are no old buildings in your surroundings, past can be found in many forms, not just architecture.  I count on your original interpretations to prove that. Take your time responding to the challenge and most of all HAVE FUN!

NOTICE: The next challenge on this blog will appear on 10 May. I’m taking a break.

THURSDAY’S SPECIAL: TRACES OF THE PAST Y4-03

It’s time for another Traces of the Past theme and this month it shall be in colour. Peeking through bleak and bare trees and nature’s monochrome there is a beautiful Neogothic Parish church of Bled. Not one’s typical view of that enchanting Slovenian town, but the one I thought you might enjoy. For once I decided to show you an example from not so distant past as this church was built in the early 20th century. You have a week to post your entries for this photo challenge. In the meantime I wish you a happy Thursday and a great weekend!

BLACK & WHITE SUNDAY: TRACES OF THE PAST Y4-02

This is the only Black & White Sunday this month, and I decided that it should be Traces of the Past. Last summer I was lucky to visit, if only briefly, beautiful Rosslyn Chapel located in the village of  Roslin, Midlothian, Scotland. Once a place of Catholic worship, after the Scottish Reformation, Roman Catholic worship in the chapel was brought to an end, and the chapel was closed to public worship until 1861, when it was opened again as a place of worship according to the rites of the Scottish Episcopal Church, a member church of the Anglican Communion.

Since the 1980’s the chapel has been a subject of many speculative theories concerning a connection of  Freemasonry, the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail. It was prominently featured in the 2003 bestselling novel  The  Da Vinci Code and its film adaptation. Today it is a privately owned working church where services are held on Sundays and weddings and baptisms are reserved for the members of the Rosslyn Chapel congregation. Read more…

I hope you will enjoy this theme again. Your traces of the past don’t have to include old architecture or planetary famous sites; I would be very glad to see your alternative take on the theme – maybe some traces from your own past…

Don’t need to rush with your submissions….  The deadline is in two weeks.

THURSDAY’S SPECIAL: TRACES OF THE PAST Y4-01

The story of Melrose Abbey extends back to some time before 650AD, though its origins are at a place now known as Old Melrose (called Mailros at the time) which stands in a loop in the River Tweed some 2.5 miles east of the monastery you see today. ..

Old Melrose, was destroyed by Kenneth Mac Alpin, King of the Scots, in 839. The site was later used as a place of retreat and it is possible that a church continued in use there for centuries after the monastery’s destruction.

In 1136 King David I asked Cistercian monks from Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire to found an abbey in Melrose. David intended this to be on the site of St Aidan’s earlier monastery at Mailros, suggesting the location was still seen as having religious significance. The Cistercians, however, needed good farming land within which to place their abbey, and appear to have been successful in their negotiations with the king. The end result was the establishment of a monastery a little further west at a place then called Little Fordell. Today this is known as Melrose.

Traces of the Past is a recurrent photo challenge that happens every month, and this is the fourth year it has been running. Next month you’ll be able to participate in Traces of the Past in Black and White for one of the two Black & White Sundays. You are free to choose whatever traces of the past you can find. It does not have to be a distant one, or rich in history; it can be something personal, or it can even have a human form. Just make sure to post for it before next Thursday and to link to this blog. Wishing you all a special and happy Thursday!

THURSDAY’S SPECIAL: TRACES OF THE PAST Y3-09

“Historic Scotland calls Hermitage Castle an eerie ruin, and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland calls it the most perfect example of a medieval castle in the Borders. It is both.”

I am too lazy today to write a few sentences about this beautiful castle/ruin that I visited briefly during my last holiday. Instead, I am offering a link to an article that might satisfy your curiosity.

THURSDAY’S SPECIAL: TRACES OF THE PAST Y3-07

It has been a few years since I was in Paris, but memories are not gone. The photo bellow shows a remarkable trace of the past in the form of church of St. Etienne, which you might also know from Woody Allen’s movie  “Midnight in Paris”.

BLACK & WHITE SUNDAY: TRACES OF THE PAST Y3-06

A step into the past, back to some 6,000 BC among the neolithic stones called Almendres Cromlech (Cromeleque dos Almendres) belonging to the “megalithic universe of Évora”, Portugal.
